Gate Street
A landmark for Holborn
2009 will see the unveiling of a striking piece of landmark art in Gate Street. Planning permission has already been obtained for Harmonic Tree, an elegant new work by up-and-coming sculptor Conrad Shawcross that should provide a focus for the pedestrian area behind Holborn Tube station and create a real sense of place in an area that has been targeted for regeneration by inholborn, Camden Council and partners.
A contemporary work of this quality will naturally attract visitors in its own right, as well as making it own contribution to the Mayor’s Legible London programme - a new network of signage to support pedestrian wayfinding.
Conrad Shawcross talks about the work
‘The piece continues on a series I started as pendulum driven drawings, which took, as with a lot of my work, the ratios of the harmonic spectrum as their subject matter. The machine that makes them is based on a Victorian machine called a Harmonograph, which involves two pendulums of variable length, one holding a pen, one holding a piece a paper. Harmonic Tree is a three dimensional interpretation of one of these drawings’.
