Bag Ban

Figures from Wrap, the government's waste and resources programme, show that from May 2006 to May 2009 the number of single-use plastic bags went down from 870m to 450m. This represents a reduction of 48% and 4,740 tonnes to send to landfill against 8,890 tonnes in 2006.

The Bag Ban is our campaign to make Holborn completely plastic bag-free, the first central London district to be so.

The first step in getting local businesses and employees to wean off wasteful bags is to supply them with an alternative.

We are now offering people who work and visit Holborn a sustainable bag in which to carry their coffees and sandwiches. The bags can carry up to two coffees and sandwiches, and can easily be folded flat to leave on your work desk and to reuse!

The bags are made from recycled materials and are fully recyclable. We’re hoping that they will significantly reduce the amount of plastic and paper bags being used in Holborn during lunchtime, and provide Holborn employees with a fun and environmental way to transport their lunches. If the bags are popular and well-used, we will also be rolling out carrier bags for your shopping.

The bags are now available at select cafes and restaurants at inholborn, and local employees can request them by e-mailing info@inholborn.org.
